We sat down with Gwendolyn recently for a quick interview to highlight what makes her business unique.
Why do you do what you do?
“Travel is my love language. I get so excited about planning and curating a personal experience for my clients. I am a travel advisor, not just a ticket taker, or a drive-through travel agent; I get to share my love and passion for travel with others in a way that is exciting and fulfilling. I love helping people make memories through thrilling international experiences. I love what I do, what can I say?”
How did you get into this profession?
“It was a dream of mine for many years. Even though Turner World Travel was incorporated in 2022, I have been planning trips for my friends and family for years. I have 12 years’ experience in the hospitality industry and a total of 20 plus years in other service-related industries. I used to manage hotels in downtown Baltimore, so I’m very familiar with, and have a full understanding of how to provide excellent customer service based on how the person defines what good service is for them. The travel agency is a new iteration of my expertise in service.
“In 2021, while I was an HR Executive Consultant, I worked with an executive coach who helped me realize I was no longer fulfilled in that work. My coach shared about their challenges and rewards starting her coaching business, and that encouraged me to take the leap into entrepreneurship myself. My husband and children were very supportive and told me that I should have been getting paid for it already from all the times I had planned the trips of my friends and extended family.”
What sets you apart from the competition?
“My team is composed of experienced travelers. I myself have traveled with a child and participated in multi-generational travel with various types of groups, such as all women, or all people of color, so we bring that personal experience and expertise that allows us to anticipate what other novice travelers wouldn’t have the insight to consider.
“We are a boutique travel agency. As my client, I’ll know your name. You will also know me and have direct access to me before and during your trip. We always meet with our clients to understand them and their needs and what makes a great trip for them.
“An example of this personalized care is one of my clients who is taking her first international trip and going to Jamaica via Montego Bay. Navigating Montego Bay International Airport can be a daunting experience for newcomers in contrast to the more streamlined process at our local Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI). Customs procedures at Montego Bay often last two to three hours. Knowing this, I was able to proactively educate my client and offer her access to their VIP lounge, which not only offers expedited customs processing but also provides a true “Jamaican” warm welcome with refreshments. In addition, I provided private transportation that was waiting for her at the airport. My client didn’t have to come to me to ask for that. It was something I suggested based on my personal experience. I also made sure she got a non-stop flight to make it as less stressful as possible, elevating the journey and setting the stage for an unforgettable travel experience. This is the type of personalization that we at Turner World Travel can offer that others can’t.
