Javier Vázquez, a seasoned martial artist with over 40 years of experience, recently opened VMA Sports Karate in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. As the head instructor, Javier brings deep knowledge, skill, and passion to the community. His goal is simple yet powerful: to empower people through martial arts, equipping them with practical self-defense skills in a fun, structured, and realistic environment.

VMA Sports Karate stands out in the local martial arts community. Javier’s commitment to a no-nonsense approach sets him apart. “I’m realistic,” he explains. “We have fun, but we’re not here just to play. My classes teach techniques that work. Students enjoy games that build reactions and techniques, but they’re learning skills they can use in real life.” With an old-school approach rooted in tradition, Javier also competes actively, showing his commitment to the art he teaches.
Javier’s journey into martial arts began with his own experiences of being bullied. “I’m a real-life story of overcoming bullying,” he shares. This personal history fuels his drive to help others gain confidence and resilience. He offers classes for kids—especially elementary-aged students—and adults, with special sessions for women seeking personal safety and empowerment.
Located on the border between Fort Lauderdale and Davie, VMA Sports Karate is close to several schools, making it a convenient choice for parents. “My ideal students are young kids and moms who want to train in the afternoons before picking up their children,” Javier says. His approach reflects his family values and makes his studio accessible to a variety of community members.
Javier has earned three black belts in different karate styles, achievements that showcase his dedication. “They’re all real—nothing was given,” he proudly notes. His experience extends beyond the dojo. He has even worked as a bodyguard for celebrities, a role that taught him the discipline, focus, and awareness needed to protect others.
“Practice today to get better tomorrow.” Javier’s tagline sums up his philosophy. Whether you’re learning karate for fitness, self-defense, or personal growth, each session builds on the last, helping you become a stronger version of yourself.
A Marlins fan and avid softball player, Javier enjoys the vibrant, international atmosphere in Fort Lauderdale. “This area has a bit of everything—nice people, diversity, and plenty to do,” he says. His community-minded approach creates a welcoming environment at VMA Sports Karate, where everyone from beginners to advanced practitioners can feel at home.
Javier believes in the value of self-defense: “It’s better to know it and not need it than to need it and not know it.” This skill has made a difference in his own life, and he’s determined to pass it on to his students, making a lasting impact.
VMA Sports Karate is more than just a dojo. It’s a community-focused, family-oriented space where students can learn, grow, and prepare for life. If you’re in Fort Lauderdale or Davie, and you want an authentic, disciplined, and passionate approach to martial arts, VMA Sports Karate is the place to be.
