The Adventures of Memo: How One Author is Helping Children Embrace Their Dual Heritage

In a world where children of immigrant families often struggle to balance their American identity with their cultural heritage, New Jersey author Gabriel Aguirre has found a unique way to help. Through his bilingual book series, The Adventures of Memo, he’s creating stories that celebrate the beauty of growing up with multiple cultures while providing young readers with characters who look and sound like them.

 

A Story Born from Personal Experience

Gabriel Aguirre’s journey as an author is deeply rooted in his own childhood experiences. As the child of Guatemalan immigrants, he grew up navigating two worlds. “It was kind of hard trying to consolidate the idea of growing up as an American, but also retaining your own culture,” Gabriel recalls. “In my childhood, a lot of times it was shunned upon to be a Spanish speaker, and you were asked basically to only speak in English.”

His parents took a different approach, creating a compromise that would shape Gabriel’s perspective for years to come. At home, the family spoke Spanish, while English was reserved for the world outside. “My parents always taught me you need to embrace both sides of your culture. You’re born and raised here, but you’re also of Guatemalan descent,” he explains.

This foundational experience became the inspiration for The Adventures of Memo, a children’s book series featuring a main character named Memo (short for Guillermo, the Spanish version of William). Like Gabriel himself, Memo grows up in the United States surrounded by American culture while maintaining strong connections to his family’s traditions, holidays, and customs.

 

Creating Stories That Matter

What began as a personal project has evolved into something much larger. Gabriel officially started writing about a year and a half ago and has already published two books in the series, with a third scheduled for release between March and April of this year. The series features bilingual components, with subsequent books planned to be fully bilingual in both Spanish and English.

“I wanted to find a way to transfer all my knowledge and wisdom into my children in a manner that they could appreciate, understand, and enjoy,” Gabriel shares. “If I tell you a story about it consistently, there’s better buy-in because it’s a more pleasant experience for them to learn and retain that information, rather than just receiving direct instruction.”

The stories are carefully crafted to appeal to families with multicultural backgrounds, weaving together themes of athletics, education, fair play, and perseverance. The main character is athletic by nature, with a grandfather written as a national wrestling champion in Mexico. The family also includes doctors and accountants, demonstrating that with hard work and passion, success is achievable in any field.

 

More Than Just an Author

While writing occupies much of his time now, Gabriel’s life is rich with other pursuits and commitments. For 16 years, he has been a member of Freemasonry, achieving the rank of Master Mason and serving as Master of the Lodge on two separate occasions. “It’s an organization that made me be honest with myself over the years to look at my flaws and gave me the tools to work on myself to be a better version of myself,” he explains.

Gabriel is also deeply involved in athletics and coaching. He holds a third-degree black belt in karate after 25 years of study and currently serves as an assistant coach for his son’s recreational wrestling team. “I’m a fan of all combat sports, whether it’s martial arts, MMA, karate, kickboxing, wrestling,” he says. This passion for sports naturally flows into his writing, with upcoming stories incorporating themes of athletics and the valuable lessons learned through fair competition.

A lifelong New Jersey resident, Gabriel appreciates what his home state offers. “I like four seasons, for one. I can’t in my head envision a Christmas season without snow,” he says with a smile. Beyond the weather, he values the diversity of environments available, from rural to suburban to urban settings, and the proximity to both New York and Philadelphia. Most importantly, his extended family all live within a 40 to 45-minute drive, allowing for regular gatherings and strong family connections.

 

A Mission Driven by Family

When asked who has had the most influence in his life, Gabriel’s answer is immediate: his children. “I look at it as though I’m looking in the mirror. And if I don’t like what I see, it’s because I’m not doing something well,” he explains. “They keep me in a position of having to continuously improve, be better, set a better example, work a little harder.”

Gabriel is happily married with three children spanning quite an age range: 21, 11, and 4 years old. His youngest, a daughter, keeps her two older brothers “honest with everything,” he says proudly. Between his sons’ sports activities and his daughter’s dancing, much of Gabriel’s free time is spent supporting their pursuits.

This dedication to family extends to the broader community through his charitable work. Through The Adventures of Memo, Gabriel supports the Fraternal Guardians, a program that helps children growing up without fathers in the home through mentorship. The program, local to the Rahway, New Jersey area, currently has three students enrolled with ten more scheduled to start in the spring.

“We’ve been giving them free copies of both books, along with writing supplies,” Gabriel shares. “More than half of kids in the U.S. are growing up without a father in the home. That’s a group we’re specifically supporting right now.”

 

Connecting with Readers

Gabriel’s books are currently available on Amazon, which handles printing and shipping on demand, keeping costs manageable for his growing business. He’s also expanded into merchandise featuring the Memo character, building what he calls “a small little world” around the character and his family.

For schools interested in bulk orders, Gabriel offers special pricing between 20 and 25 percent off, and each book comes with a personalized autograph and note. “I try to find out information about the students for when I’m writing my notes, so it relates to them,” he explains.

The books are already making their way into local school libraries, where students can check them out and discover stories that reflect their own experiences. Gabriel’s book signings have created memorable moments, including one where a student approached him explaining that his middle name was Guillermo, named after his grandfather who was also called Memo. Despite the boy’s Nigerian and Puerto Rican heritage making the Spanish name unexpected at first glance, the connection was powerful and genuine.

Gabriel maintains an active social media presence under the name “Memo Adventures” on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, where he engages with business groups, Chambers of Commerce, and BNI groups.

 

Looking to the Future

Gabriel’s vision for The Adventures of Memo extends far beyond personal success. Within the next five years, he plans to have at least ten stories published in the series. More importantly, he envisions his books becoming part of ESL (English as a Second Language) curriculum in schools.

“I hope to make that a tool for kids that are transitioning into the U.S. and learning the language, that they have a place to read a good story, learn the language, enjoy it, but still, if they need help, it’s right there in their hands,” Gabriel explains.

It’s a ambitious goal rooted in a simple truth: children deserve to see themselves in the stories they read. They deserve characters who understand what it’s like to celebrate both Thanksgiving and traditional family holidays from other cultures. They deserve narratives that honor where their families came from while celebrating where they are now.
