At first glance, Hoosier Shooting Academy (HSA) might look like just another gym tucked into a quiet commercial development in southeast Indianapolis. But step inside, and you’ll discover something far more intentional—a training facility built on fundamentals, consistency, and a deep respect for the game.
Founded in early 2020 by longtime coach Paul Swartz, HSA was created to challenge the status quo in youth basketball. Tired of seeing kids thrown into competitive play without proper development, Paul set out to build a place where athletes could grow through structured training, thoughtful coaching, and a focus on doing things the right way.
Today, HSA stands as a trusted destination for players and families who value substance over flash—and development over shortcuts. But building it took more than just hardwood and hoops. It required vision, grit, and a willingness to do things differently.
HSA isn’t just the result of careful planning or basketball strategy. It’s rooted in something far deeper—a journey marked by personal loss, perspective, and an unshakable drive to create meaning through challenge.
Just one day after losing his mother, Paul was holding his newborn son. That emotional whiplash—losing a parent and becoming one in the span of 24 hours—was life-altering. But it wouldn’t be the last time Paul’s personal world would be shaken.
Years later, Paul’s young daughter was diagnosed with cancer. “It just sucks,” he says plainly. “There’s no other way to describe it. You watch your child fight something they didn’t ask for, and it changes everything about the way you look at life.”
Through the long months of treatment, doctor visits, and uncertainty, Paul kept showing up—not just for his daughter, but for the kids walking through the doors of Hoosier Shooting Academy. “There were days I was emotionally wrecked, but I still had to coach, still had to lead. That became part of the lesson, too—that life doesn’t stop when things get hard. You keep showing up.”
His daughter is now cancer-free, and the Make-A-Wish trip to Disney is a treasured family memory. But the experience left a permanent imprint on Paul’s philosophy as a coach, father, and business owner.
“It reminded me why I started this in the first place. It’s not just about basketball. It’s about using this game to build stronger kids—mentally, emotionally, spiritually. Kids who know how to fight, who know how to persevere, and who grow into adults who lead with purpose.”
Swartz, who lives in nearby Franklin Township, originally just wanted a safe, accessible place for players to train. After an exhausting search across Indianapolis, it wasn’t a spreadsheet that told him he found the right place—it was a feeling.
“I pulled into this complex and thought, this is it,” he says. “There were stop signs. Traffic was slow. I thought, if I’m going to have teenagers driving here, I need to know they’re safe pulling in and out of the facility.”
He was the first tenant in the building. The space had to be completely customized—every floorboard, hoop placement, and paint line meticulously planned by Paul himself (he estimates he redrew the floor plan over 80 times).
Then came COVID.
Paul had signed the lease just days before pandemic shutdowns began. But instead of backing out, he pushed forward. “It was never about chasing profits,” he explains. “It was about creating a place where the game could be taught the right way.”
In Paul’s view, youth basketball in Indiana—and across the country—is broken. “If kids don’t develop real skills—dribbling, shooting, passing, reading the floor—they’ll eventually hit a wall. It’s like giving a kid test after test without ever teaching the material,” he says.
He’s especially vocal about the failings of AAU culture. “It’s become all about playing more games, getting more exposure, being seen. But who’s actually teaching the game? Who’s developing these kids?”
At HSA, Paul and his team focus on consistent training, individualized development, and high expectations. “Our warmups are harder than most people’s workouts,” he laughs. “But that’s intentional. “I want kids to show up at a game and have others think, ‘That kid’s already outworked me.’”
For Paul, running HSA has meant stepping off the court and into the role of CEO—a shift he didn’t expect but has grown into. “I had to stop thinking like a coach and start thinking like a business owner,” he admits. “It’s been humbling. Every leak in the bucket, every stalled initiative—it all comes back to me.”
But it’s also allowed him to focus on mentoring the next generation of coaches and staff, and creating a culture rooted in purpose.
His mission? To create more than just great players. “I want to develop great people. I’ve had kids cry in my office because of the pressure they feel to perform on the court—pressure that often comes from parents. I want this to be a place where they learn to love the game and themselves, not just chase points.”
He’s had players move on to flag football, wrestling, or even art. “That’s a win,” Paul insists. “If we help them figure out what they’re really passionate about, even if it’s not basketball, that’s success.”
The answer comes down to three things: coaching experience, consistency, and culture.
Paul’s coaching background includes high school and college experience, and he’s worked with future pros. “But it’s not about my resume,” he says. “It’s about what I can do for your kid.”
Where most trainers bounce between gyms or operate like food trucks—unpredictable and inconsistent—HSA is reliable. “We’re like the Chick-fil-A of basketball,” Paul jokes. “You know what you’re going to get every time you walk in the door.”
And what you get is work. Real, honest work. No gimmicks. No hype. Just fundamentals taught with intention.
Paul dreams of expansion. More locations across Indy. More kids impacted. More coaches trained the right way. But he’s quick to admit he’s still learning. “I’m not where I want to be yet. I’m still growing into the business side of this. But I know the product is good.”
The facility has already become a magnet for families from Franklin Township, New Palestine, Greenwood, and beyond. And while Paul may downplay his own role, it’s clear that what’s being built here is bigger than basketball.
It’s about heart. It’s about growing. It’s about holding yourself to a higher standard—not just as an athlete, but as a parent, a mentor, a leader, and a human being.
And that, as any Hoosier knows, is what basketball was always meant to be.
